KITCHENER —
Gregory Dent has been a woodworking purist for decades. The 52-year-
For more than 30 years, he has always been a carpenter.
For the past four years, he has been doing fine carpentry, bike and repair work in his kitchen workshop.
He used a combination of power tools and hand tools to do the job, but never considered using an automated computer
The control engraving machine that does this work for him.
\"I am one of the purists,\" he said . \"
There\'s even an old photo on Dent\'s business card.

\"Why do I want these machines?
\"When a customer placed a large order for a custom wooden coasters about two years ago, everything changed and dent soon realized that he would never finish the order on time, nor will he meet his high quality requirements for his work.
So he began to search the internet for an affordable CNC (
Computer numerical control)
Machine, which uses a computer to operate a engraving tool called a router that automatically cuts almost any design imaginable.
Most of what he found, however, was outside his price range, many of which were at $10,000 or more.
He found Sienci lab by accident.
Founded in 2016 by Andy Lee and Chris sorrowwood, students majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo, the company has designed a solid, reliable and affordable desktop CNC Machine
It offers three sizes;
For beginners, grind a unit 10-inch by seven-
Inch cutting surface and two larger long grinding units (
12 inch by 12 inch, 30 inch by 30 inch).
According to the configuration, prices range from about $550 to about $1,500.
The first design of this startup is Mill One.
It attracted more supporters from $60,000 to 120 in 2016, but it really hit a home run with its long grind Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, supporters who raised more than $436,000 by 324.
Sienci has received about $50,000 in grants over the past few years, but there is no private equity or external investment to help finance.
The start-up was very successful. Li dropped out of school and ran the company in full. time.
Sorrowwood has just finished his degree.
The machine is made of 3D printed plastic (
Products produced by Sienci in office space, No. 44 Gaoke Street, downtown kidina)
Aluminum and steel.
It ships parts around the world for assembly by customers.
Router for machine (
Carving a wide range of materials, including almost any kind of soft metal such as wood, plastic, aluminum and brass, as well as a variety of foam and wax for model making or metal casting.
\"The level of detail you can get with this is crazy,\" Li said . \" He raised a piece of aluminum with a lifelike head carved on it.

It\'s about to set foot on 400-
Unit building process. It has pre-
About 370 of them were sold, but Li expects the remaining units to be sold when they are all built.
The startup makes these devices affordable because it uses more than a dozen 3D printers in the office to 3D print its own parts, and most of the other materials come from local suppliers.
It has shipped customers to more than 30 countries.
Carpentry accounts for about customers, Lee said.
\"It\'s still in the early stages, but as we can see on the 3D printer, there\'s a huge potential,\" he said . \".
\"What do people know (the machines)
But it was really their first time.
\"The two founders of Sienci are only 22 years old, and many of their clients are in their 50 s and 60 s, making them an interesting and insightful dynamic.
Sienci has 10 testers around the world to evaluate and evaluate the machine, as well as any improvements to the design.
Dent is one of the testers and his workshop is only a few steps away from Sienci.
\"It really shows me the possibility,\" he said of joining the team . \".
Dent used a long grinding machine in his workshop.
In many ways, he says, it\'s like having a second hand around.
When Dent builds a bookcase for another customer, the machine can be carved and decorated for one customer.
This makes him more efficient.
Not so tired
At the end of each working day.
For those who are still skeptical about the machine, or those who scoff at the thought of using a computer to help in a store, dents are similar to the days of electric table saws, long planing and exercises first came out.
\"If it makes the process simpler so that you can do more work at the end of the day, why don\'t you? \" he said.
