This Instructure shows you how to build a CNC that is cheap and simple but very small.
You can use it to grind balsa wood and different foam.
Everything you need can be found on the old PC or it can be bought very cheaply (I paid ~30$).
It was inspired by the pocket laser engraver, but I added the third axis and now I can grind small 3D objects.
For this project you need: Open CD-
the computer really difficult.
Find yourself an old CD.
Roms and follow the steps shown in the picture.
Even if your CD
Roms look a bit different and there shouldn\'t be a lot of problems opening them up.
Please make sure the power supply is not plugged in before invading the power supply.
It\'s easy to crack the power supply.
All you need to do is connect the green cable with the black cable (ground).
Make sure you don\'t weld the two cables, because in the case of a short circuit, in order to reset the fuse in the power supply, you have to disconnect the two cables and reconnect them (
It\'s a good idea to put the switch in).
The power supply will start running once the green cable is connected to the ground.
With DC power now!
To use the power supply, peel off a red cable (5V)
And a black cable (ground).
It is also useful to peel off the yellow cable (12V)
Or orange cable (3,3V)
For milling motors and cooling fans.
Put the stripped cable into the clip.
This part is not complicated.
All you need is a platform (
Mine is 13, 5 cm x 17 cm but other sizes are OK as well)
Two pillars.
Mine is 24 cm high).
I made it out of wood because it is easy to cut and I can put the screws in it.
After getting the wooden parts, simply screw the pillars onto the platform. (
Make sure your slides fit between the platform and the pillars as some slides are higher or smaller).
You have to weld the cable on the stepping motor.
This is a bit tricky because there is not much room for welding, so you need a patient and calm hand.
If you weld the cable to a ribbon cable that is already connected to the pedometer, you can simplify this step.
Just plug in between tracks and you can weld the cable to the ribbon cable.
Insulation will be connected to avoid short circuit.
To make the device look better in the end, I nailed the cable to the wood with a stapler.
Looks better and more organized.
Since it is not possible to put the screws into the slide, you have to take a good glue (I used a two-
Adhesive for components).
Cutting a wooden platform for the base shaft (the Y-Axis)
Stick it to the plastic on the slide.
After that, stick a piece of wood as wide as your Z-with glue
Slide the shaft to X-Axis.
When your glue is dry, connect to your X-Axis.
The hole must match the distance of the hole, which is located in Z-Axis slide.
Everything is ready now, you can put Y-
Axis to the ground and X-
The shaft on the two pillars.
You can attach Z-when you are done-Axis to your X-Axis.
Note: You need the gasket and gasket as the holes on the slide are too large for most screws.
You also have to make sure that the slides are not connected to the platform and are free to move.
If you wish, you can add a metal platform to your base.
You can take the metal from the old CD.
Rom case and glue it to the platform (
It is useful to have a metal platform because you can fix the PCB with magnets instead of tape).
Once the structure is complete, you must connect the motor to Easydrivers and Arduino.
There are two ways to do this.
The simpler and faster way is to put all the easydriver into the breadboard and connect them to the Arduino.
You can connect it as shown on the image done with the Fritzing app.
Another way is to make a PCB.
The downside is that you have to weld a lot of things, but you can connect the PCB directly to the Arduino as a shield.
As mentioned in the picture, you should also add a fan to cool Easydrivers and Arduino (
Especially if you want to put them in the House).
Now all you need to do is find out which pin of your stepping motor to find which pin on your Easydrivers.
Also, it is useful to check the ribbon cable.
Normally you have to connect the cables to the easydriver as if they were connected to the stepping motor.
The spindle consists of a DC motor and two screw terminals.
It is important that the dimensions of the shaft are the same as the tool to reduce vibration and improve accuracy.
Cut metal parts from screw terminals.
After getting the metal part, connect one side of the metal part to the motor and the other to the tool.
Tighten the screw and rotate the second metal part by 180 °.
Put it on top of the first metal part (
To minimize vibration and improve accuracy, a second metal part is required as a counterweight).
When the spindle is finished, connect it to Z-Axis.
I used a metal part, but there are also connection points on the front of many motors that you can use.
Make sure to use the light motor as your Z-
The shaft does not lift heavy objects!
The last step is software.
You must download and install the Arduino Software Grbl Library and the Grbl controller.
After downloading the Grbl library, you must click sketch \"--
> Import and storage--
> Add the library in Arduino Software and select the zip file you just downloaded.
Send the library to Arduino now (
Your Arduino must be connected via USB).

> After installing Grbl on the Arduino, open the Grbl controller and select the port to which the Arduino is connected.
Press the open button.
Now, a list of options appears in the command screen.
By entering the number of the options, you must change several of them (

You may need to try it out, but the options shown in my screenshot should work.
If your motor is in the wrong direction, go to the tool. -> Options --
> Axis, then click the axis you want to reverse.
After completing the CNC, you can start the milling.
Just need to generate a file and convert it to gcode.
Send it to your Mill now and start grinding (
Keep in mind that your object must conform to the small size of this CNC).
Note: When the Grbl controller is started, it is automatically in alarm mode.
Before milling, you must switch it by entering $ X in the command field.
To generate files for your CNC, you can use Inkscape with add on gcodetols, both programs are free.
But you can also use any other program.
In my case, I grind a star into a flower foam.
This material is very soft, that is, it can also be milled using a drill bit instead of a cutter.
I connect the foam with double sided tape.
If your bed is flat correctly and you use a cutter, it is also possible to produce a small PCB.
The PCB can be connected with a magnet because I have a magnetic platform made of CDRom case.
